A Starter Shopping List for 30 Plants a Week

Here's a list for one shop that can get you to 30 over a week, combined with whatever's already in your cupboard. Screenshot it, cross things off.

Fresh

  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Carrots
  • Red peppers
  • Spinach or kale
  • Mushrooms
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Lemons
  • A bunch of parsley or coriander
  • Fresh ginger

Tins and jars

  • Mixed beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Chopped tomatoes
  • Red lentils (dried)

Frozen

  • Peas
  • Mixed berries
  • Edamame

Bakery and cereals

  • A seeded rye or multigrain loaf
  • Oats

Nuts, seeds, dried fruit

  • A mixed seed bag
  • Walnuts
  • Raisins or dried apricots

Spices (if you don't have them)

  • Cumin
  • Smoked paprika
  • Cinnamon

Depending on how you count the mixed bags, that's comfortably over 30 different plants.

After the shop

When you get home, it's tempting to log everything you bought. Don't. The count is for what you eat, not what's in the cupboard. Log as you go. In Eating30, packaged things like the mixed beans and the seeded loaf can be scanned when you open them, so the label does the work.

Eating30 is an app for iPhone and Android that counts the different plants you eat each week, with 30 as the target. The core tracking is free. It's a habit tracker, not medical advice.
